7 Steps to Immediately Enhance Your Image
Your image is your personal expression to others about who you are. Your appearance reflects your self image, attitude, confidence and state of mind. A strong, purposeful appearance is the hallmark of an effective image presence. When you look good (and you know it), you naturally feel more confident and happy. You tend to radiate an aura of effortless positive energy which becomes contagious and magnetic. Others will be drawn to you and respond with the same positive energy that you yourself project.
Research has proven that impressions are formed in the first 60 seconds of interaction. Here are some basic steps you can take today to immediately enhance your image to make a lasting, positive, first impression:
1.How is your posture? It is a known fact that good posture takes off 10 pounds, makes you look younger and creates an image of competence. Make sure you stand straight and that your shoulders are not slumping when meeting a new person.
2.Pay attention to your undergarments. If you don’t feel comfortable with your ‘innerwear’ you won’t feel comfortable in your clothes. For women, owning bras that fit well is critical. For men, options in underwear have expanded. Decide if you are a boxer or briefs type of guy. Then explore the many options now available in these categories and find what makes you at ease. It is important for both men and woman that when wearing undergarments that it feels (and looks) like wearing none at all.
3.When shaking hands, make sure your grip is firm and that you make eye contact when saying your introduction. Eye contact is critical. Strong eye contact that is held for a few seconds with a new acquaintance in a friendly manner conveys confidence and self assuredness.
4.Don’t be afraid of color! Color has power and is an asset that can be used to enhance your image. Color can convey a particular impression, for example, red conveys confidence and high energy while blue is more understated and conveys trust and support. Using your optimal colors help you enhance your skin, eye and hair coloring to achieve a harmonious and stunning look. Know what colors work for you—those that make you ‘pop’ and those that make you look pale or drained. Build your wardrobe using the former and avoid the latter or use only as accents.
5.Pay attention to the details. Tags that show on accessories or clothing look sloppy. Ripped seams, missing buttons, stains, labels that show—all these detract from your image no matter how fabulous your ensemble. Let’s not forget hair, makeup nails and basic hygiene. Hands are a focal point: Make sure your nails well manicured and clean and that your hands are well moisturized.
6.Try new things! Don’t get yourself in a clothing rut, wearing the same styles, colors or shapes all the time. Use burgeoning fashion trends as a way to experiment with new looks that express your essence and compliment your wardrobe. You don’t need to be a slave to fashion trends, just open enough to try those items that have appeal to you. If you’re cautious, start small—try on a belt you find appealing and see how it makes you feel. Or a new shade of red. Experiment with fabric and patterns. You’d be surprised about what you can discover about yourself and your inner passions once you allow yourself the permission to be adventurous with fashion.
7.Decide what image you want to express and ensure that the way you look, communicate, behave and your persona is aligned with this purpose. Here’s to purposeful presence!
